The PSI AquaPen is a lightweight hand-held PAM fluorometer that is convenient for quick, reliable and easily repeatable measurements of photosynthetic parameters in both algal and cyanobacterial suspensions. The AquaPen-C is equipped with blue and red LEDs, optically filtered, and precisely focused, to deliver light intensities of up to 3,000 µmol.m -2 .s -1 to suspensions. Blue excitation light is used for chlorophyll excitation in algal cultures. Red-orange excitation light is used for excitation through phycobilins, and is more suitable for use with cyanobacterial cultures. The AquaPen-P is equipped with a single blue LED emitter (optionally red or white).

AquaPen AP 110-C and AquaPen AP 110-P
AquaPen is a lightweight hand-held PAM fluorometer that is very convenient for quick, reliable, and easily repeatable measurements of photosynthetic parameters both in algal and cyanobacterial suspensions. AquaPen-C is equipped with blue and red LED emitters, optically filtered and precisely focused to deliver light intensities of up to 3,000 µmol.m -2 .s -1 to measured suspensions. Blue excitation light is intended for chlorophyll excitation, i.e., for measuring chlorophyll fluorescence in algal cultures. Red-orange excitation light is intended for excitation through phycobilins and is suitable for measuring in cyanobacterial cultures. AquaPen-P is equipped with a single blue LED emitter (optionally red or white).
AquaPen is available in two versions. AquaPen AP 110-C is a cuvette version of the AquaPen fluorometer and contains an inbuild turbidometer for measurement of optical density. AquaPen AP 110-P is a probe version of AquaPen, which allows the same measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence in suspension by directly placing the probe in the suspension medium.
Due to ultra-high sensitivity – up to 0.5 µg Chl/l – the AquaPen AP 110-C can measure natural water samples containing very low concentrations of phytoplankton.
Measured data are sequentially stored in the internal FluorPen memory. Data transfer is via USB or Bluetooth communication. Comprehensive FluorPen 1.1 software provides data transfer routines and many additional features for data presentation in tables and graphs.

AQUAPENS MEASURE Ft - continuous fluorescence yield in non-actinic light. Ft is equivalent to F 0 if the leaf sample is dark-adapted. QY - photosystem II Quantum Yield. QY is equivalent to Fv/Fm in the dark-adapted samples and to Fv'/Fm' in the light-adapted samples. OJIP - Chlorophyll Fluorescence Induction Kinetics. The OJIP curves enable observing major changes that occur during exposure of plants to high irradiance. NPQ - Non-Photochemical Quenching. The NPQ protocol is the most typically used measuring approach to quantify photochemical and nonphotochemical quenching. The measurement should be performed with a dark-adapted sample. Light Curve (QY) - Photosystem II Quantum Yield estimated from fluorescence that is measured sequentially in several different light levels. Optical Density (only AquaPen-C): by two IR LEDs (720 nm, 680 nm)
